Exaltation by Chibueze Obunadike

tonight, God sleeps in the lightning.

look how he carves our names
moth-white against the spine of the sky,

a burning elegy,
              a blistering chorus streaming
across our marbled faces,

                 lovely, eternal.

we could sleep in this night forever,
hold on to this dream with glazed hands.

tonight, we are angels in our bodies,
six-winged wonders, glorious cherubs,

furnace in the heat of our mouths,
God in the heat of the fire.

                the prophet said, “& i looked, & behold…”

they will see us & cry Amen, child.
Amen.
